Established in 1873, and managed by the British firm Butterfield & Swire and its parent company John Swire & Sons, the China Navigation Company became the largest foreign shipping company operating in China. This list of C. N. Co ships’ officers and engineers has been developed mostly using lists of mariners based in Shanghai that were published in an annual directory, the North China Hong List. This directory is not easy to find in libraries and the records here mostly cover the years 1883-1900, with gaps, with some earlier entries. Only C. N. Co names were extracted for the database (as this was made for a project on the company, but a PDF with the full listings is here. (This was quite roughly copied from a microfilm reader).
