- Notes // Примечания: “A self-made man,“ known as the “Russian Rockefeller,” one-time owner of the Russo-Asiatic Bank, oil wells in the Caucasus, coal mines in the Russian Far East and Russia’s largest newspaper, Russkoe Slovo. He was of peasant origins and started working at his father’s windmill at the age of 12, later joining an export firm in Saint Petersburg and eventually starting a fortune in army supplies. “Even Rockefeller and all his millions did not play as big a part in the destinies of his country as did Batolin in the last 22 years of Imperial Russia. Although 61 years of age, his death came as a surprise to all, as he was full of energy and plans, buried in work and had his day cut out for him by the minute.” Batolin died during a visit to Shanghai, in the Astor House, a few days after arriving from Tokyo. Survived by wife in Hakodate, Japan.
