- Notes // Примечания: “A personal grudge led to the murder of Peter Michagin, Russian manager of the Royal Café in Rue Chu Pao San, cabaret street, at 10 o’clock on Monday night when rifle shots suddenly stilled the pre-New Year merriment in the place. Michagin was killed instantly on the front steps of the cabaret and his assailant, a discharged Russian watchman A. Footlik (Futlik), turned the weapon on himself a few minutes afterwards near St. Joseph’s Church, Rue Montauban, after a chase by the French police. He was taken to St. Marie’s Hospital, and his condition was reported as critical; he was wounded in the abdomen and little hope is held out for his recovery. The murder and attempted suicide created intense excitement in the brightly lit cabaret street and for a few moments the strains of jazz ceased. It did not take long, however, before the street resumed its holiday celebration and with the exception of the New Royal Café every cabaret soon presented its usual aspect of gaiety and abandon.”
