Retreating with Kolchak’s troops, he found his way to China and became one of the first Russians to enter the Shanghai Police force. Becoming a police detective, he solicited the enrollment of many Russians into the force. Prior to his retirement he served in the parks and recreation department, managing Hongkew Park. Reflecting the benevolent character of the deceased, his family asked for donations to local charities instead of sending flower tributes.
