Romanchenko, who in in 1913 broke the world long-distance record by swimming 52 kilometers in the Caspian Sea, died at the age of 68 in the local Belgium Radium Hospital. During his career as professional sport luminary, Mr Romanenko traveled over Russia and Siberia and sailed up the Volga River in a yacht. At one time he taught swimming to seamen of the Imperial Russian Maritime Fleet. For the last few years Romanchenko had been dependent in charity. Despite his robust health he contracted heart disease and was placed in the Russian Orthodox Confraternity Hospital. Insisting that he had been cured he left the hospital, but soon had another relapse, this time fatal.” The Shanghai Zaria wrote: “We shall no longer see that great figure in a thin raincoat, supporting himself on a stick, hobbling along Avenue Joffre in the rain to sell the little wax works on which he depended for his livelihood.” Romanchenko, born i Voronej, was unmarried and lived at 155 Route Remi.
