Suicide last evening too the life of one of the most famous musicians in Shanghai – Innokenty A. Smirnoff, 28, employed as the banjo player in the Charleston Café, 14 Rue Chu Pao San, and attached to the Russian Detachment of SVC.” “I. A. Smirnoff was found lying prostrate on the floor about 8 pm yesterday, by a servant who heard a rifle shot which appeared to emanate from his room in a lodging house, 602 Avenue Joffre. In a few hours he died at the Blue Hospital. Deceased, who was employed at the Charleston Café, returned to his poorly equipped quarters at about 6.30 pm, and asked for cold water shortly after. Nothing more was noted until rifle shot was heard. There was a pool of blood and the body on the floor. The rifle had been placed under the chin and the left portion of the skull had been blown off. The deceased had no relatives in Shanghai and was a graduate of a Siberian military academy”
