He shot himself through the heart, in YMCA hut at Great Western Road British Military Camp, and died on way to hospital. Funeral was organized by YMCA secretary F. W. Thomas. “Smirnoff joined the British Forces YMCA in 1930 and was said by his superiors to be a good worker and contented with his job. It was known, however, that he had been despondent over private matters. He wrote some letters shortly before his death, referring to the cause of his worry.”
