- Notes // Примечания: “Stepanoff suffered a heat stroke, followed by a paralysis and a hemorrhage.” “The dead artist was born in Petrograd 26 years ago, his father being a colonel in the Imperial Guard. His mother, with two of her children, is at present in Serbia, and is well-known there for her philanthropy. Having finished his cadet training in Petrograd, the young soldier was unable to cultivate his artistic ability due to the revolution. When it broke ou, Serge Stepanoff at once entered General Denikin’s cavalry regiment as a cadet and about two years later received his commission. He was twice wounded in the war and once shell-shocked. He received various decorations, including the coveted St. George’s Cross. A pathetic circumstance of Mr Stepanoff’s death is that he had persuaded his young brother from America to join him here, and the latter is not steaming to Shanghai ignorant of the sad news that awaits him.” A large gathering of friends was present at the funeral on August 17, 1926.
