- Notes // Примечания: Born in an aristocratic family in Perm, he studied archeology. In 1904 he was drafted and fought in the Russo-Japanese War, visiting Manchuria for the first time. In 1922, having found himself an exile in China, he spent 13 years Harbin. He worked in the CER administration and did research. In the middle of the 1930s Tolmachev and wife moved to Shanghai. Lived at 106a Avenue Edward VII. In 1942 they received Soviet citizenship and were on their way to the USSR when Tolmachov died. Survived by wife Ekaterina Petrovna Tolmacheff, b. 1892 in Petrograd, ERC 121848. Bio in Wikipedia. From a newspaper, May 1940: “Mr V. J. Tolmachev, the well-known orientalist and one of the founders of the Harbin Museum, read an interesting paper in Sokol Club on Wednesday, 24 April. The lecture, entitled Chinese Food, touched on the Chinese climate, soil, precepts of Confucius on sea cabage, tasty insects andvarious dishes that can be prepared from the Chinese bean. The speaker also dwelt on the virtues of vegetarianism and the pleasures of everlasting fasting. The lecture was illustrated with various Chinese products.”
