In 1945, Boris Bryner and his wife were kidnapped in Harbin and imprisoned in the USSR. Thanks to the soliciting of his brother Leonid, they were released. After brief sojourns in Switzerland and USA, Boris Bryner hurried to Shanghai, where brother Leonid was dying of intestinal cancer. He outlived his brother by half a year and died of a heart attack, aged 58.
