- Notes // Примечания: “Agafia Garzey had her hundredth birthday on 18 February 1940 at the Russian home for aged women, 1229 Rue Lafayette. She celebrated it by walking from home to Bubbling Well Road and back, aided only by her walking stick. Earlier last week she had walked from the home to Range Road for a spot of exercise.” “Mrs Garzey was born in Sebastopol, Crimea, on February 18, 1940, but she moved away from that country because of the Crimean War. She came to Shanghai in 1930 from Vladivostok and for the past seven years has been an inmate of the home. Shanghai’s wars of 1932 and 1937 had little effect on her, for she was in the midst of bombardment of Crete during the war between Greece and Turkey in 1896.”
