- Notes // Примечания: Funeral services for J. Karkatsky, of Polish origin, who became a tragic victim of the aerial bombardment of the city on Black Saturday, August 14, 1937, were announced in the newspapers two weeks after the event. Karkatsky was among the first recorded deaths, killed at the intersection Nanking Road and the Bund. “The tragedy occurred at 4:27, as recorded by the Cathay Hotel clock stopped by the explosion, when after a day of air dashes, a little bombing and much anti-aircraft fire, ten Chinese aeroplanes appeared in the cloudy sky heading downriver. Immediately the Japanese cruiser Izumo let loose her anti-aircraft guns and rings of smoke dotted the progress of the air fleet, as shrapnel burst. Six of the machines vanished in the clouds, but from one of the four monoplanes making up the rear, four aerial torpedoes were seen to drop as the planes passed over the Bund far from their apparent objective. Two feel into the Whangpoo creating a tidal wave which swept far into the Bund. Two others fell in Nanking Road. A bomb curved through the air, struck the Palace Hotel a glancing blow and dealt carnage indescribable. A scene of dreadful death was uncovered as the high explosive fumes slowly lifted.”
