Kott and Filippov were on patrol duty all along the railway line sector. They carried their watch under a persistent, heavy drizzle. The streets and houses in the military zone were deserted, and the total absence of lights forced them to use a flashlight to explore alleys and corners. The flashlight made them ideal targets for the mysterious rifleman, firing at them from the other side of the railway line, Japanese-controlled territory. Kott fell to the ground and Filippov knelt beside him.... Formerly a hairdresser, Vladimir Kott joined the Russian Detachment four and a half months ago. His nearest relatives reside in Harbin.”
