- Notes // Примечания: From Tomsk. Formerly a journalist with the Russian Far Eastern Times, later realtor and owner of the New China Trading Co. Mamontoff was murdered by a hired assassin in connection with his political affiliations. “The shooting occurred at 6.10 o’clock outside of Lane 1252 Rue Lafayette near the Russian Officers’ Club, when a lone Chinese gunman opened fire on the Russian, lodging the bullet in his abdomen. In the ensuing excitement the gunman escaped. Mr. Mamontoff was taken in the passing private car to St. Marie’s Hospital where he was operated on.” He subsequently died, and later that year Evgeny Hovans/Pick/Kojevnikoff was tried for the conspiracy to murder Mamontoff on the grounds that Mamontoff reported him as a Communist prior. Mamontoff was known to the Shanghai Police as a “Russian of ill repute,” connected to manufacturing of bombs and using various business enterprises to cover his dealings. ERC 70630. Although he was formerly a bachelor, Anna Ivanovna Mihaleva was considered his widow (d. after 1941).
